That’s how long I’ve been a mother! It’s mind boggling to think about but there it is and today, on the eve of celebrating two back to back birthdays…our sons 20th and our daughters 15th, I am once again reminded of just how incredibly blessed I am to be a mum of five. Never in my wildest dreams could I ever have imagined just how astounding, amazing, challenging, overwhelming and exhausting {all at the same time} this journey of mothering would be. Motherhood has been the most wonderful journey of discovery {a journey in which I am still learning something new every day} and my greatest achievement to date.
Twenty years ago tomorrow I was given the ultimate gift, that of becoming a mum. In the months leading up to our sons birth I remember walking on a cloud of pure elation…I could.not.wait for our little person to arrive. I was not only blown away at our ability to create another human being, I was in total awe at my body’s ability to nurture and grow another and was completely besotted with the fact that our love for each other would soon result in two becoming three. Not only did our first born make a mum of me, a dad of him and parents of us..he also gave my parents and grandparents the joy of being firsts…grandparents and greats. What a legacy.
The depth of a mother’s love is unfathomable and it is through our children that I have learnt not only the true meaning of love but also patience; courage; humility; grace and sacrifice among other things. I am fiercely proud of who our children are and feel deeply privileged to have had such an instrumental part in their lives. I will be forever grateful for the gift bestowed upon me...that of being a mum.
To our oldest son and our only daughter…I wish you both the happiest of birthdays, may all your dreams be realised.

What beautiful words - I remember that feeling too, I couldn't wait either. And then everything was upside and backwards, but perfect.
